Take Your Child To The Library

Last summer was the first time I took my grand-children to the local library. There are lots of books there and my grand-kids were delighted. They have lots of books at home but oh my their eyes were delighted. The library had books that were perfect for them. While the books at home at times may get old the library has something new to check out each visit. The best part is we can read them for free and even take home a book or two if we choose to. The library is perfect to help develop a great reading habit.

So with so many books how would we ever find the perfect book for us?? Should it be within their reading level or should it be a book that interest them even if it is behind or beyond their reading level?? The great thing is those that are easier to read can be read alone if they choose to and other books a bit above their reading level can be read with a little help from you. The challenging books offers a great way to boost and push them to the next level.

If you are not sure what reading level they are at there is an easy test the "five finger test" that can help you with this. When your child opens the book to a random page and reads count the words that your child can't read by holding a finger up each time they come across a word to hard for them. When they reach 5 fingers or above the book is a bit too difficult for them. Holding up less than 5 fingers then the book is a good fit for them to read independently.

Remember the librarian is always there to help them select a book perfect for them. Whether it be their reading level or a them that they are interesting in. They can offer book suggestions based on interests and age. They have experience and know what books may be rather popular and your child will love.

If your child is into books no matter how easy or hard or theme let them go for it. They are building a love for reading and should be allowed to do so. Criticizing them for reading the wrong book may make them not want to read. My only rule here is that the books must come out of the children's library and must be an age appropriate theme. Challenge them to seek out books that they are interested in.

Do you have a favorite book at the library?? What does your child love to read??

Our Minds May Lie To US The Bible Tells Us The Truth

Sin was a major stumbling block when I was a teenager. I was blinded by my fear and thought I needed to make my own decisions. I was also always aware and afraid that God would punish me for the things I did wrong. My parents were not much help my mother struggled with her mental illness and my daddy worked way to much. I often took care of my younger siblings and thought of ways I would escape some day.

Eventually, I did talk to a youth minister and learned that there were times that the devil could control my thoughts and use them against me. My feelings were something that were mine but could be played against me. Yes I did have it rough but God did and always would love me. The truths in the bible is what I learned to guide my walk. God made promises that showed he would always love me.

There are times that our hearts and minds do not always tell us the truth. The facts are in the bible and that is God's truth. God sent his perfect son, Jesus Christ, from Heaven to save people who needed a savior that would love us enough to die on the cross for us. But, he did not just die he arose from the grave. My father has that kind of power to protect our souls. So when our hearts and minds say to fear and our feelings start to overpower with negative recall the  Love that our God through Christ Jesus did for us.

History Apple Fools Day

April 1st is one day that all those joke loving individuals wait for. Items such as fake bugs, keys to swap, and stories to be carefully told will be ready to roll. It is a fun way to get a laugh or the pranksters think so. Remember in all things be kind to the pranksters. But when and where did all this fun begin.

Some suggest it started April 1st 1582 when France adopted the Gregorian calendar. Before that the new year began on March 25 and not on January 1st. There were still those that wanted to continue to celebrate the old New Year at the beginning of April and these individuals were called "fools" In medieval Frnace, the Feast of Fools fell on January 1. During this time individuals swapped jobs, fake people were elected,

In the 16th century the old French tradition died out and April Fool's Day came to be. The french called the fooled person "April Fish" and the trick was to pin a paper fish to a friends back. Scotland would celebrate April Fools Day or better known as Gowkie Day by attaching a "kick me" sign to their friends backs. Brazil April 1st is known as "lie day" where people try to fool their loved ones with a comedic effect.

You can tell that the American Traditions take a bit of all the cultures for our April Fools Day.

Did you fool anyone today??

Stay Safe on Spring Break

Young adults often make part of their spring break with alcohol. The trick is to be old enough to drink and to limit how much you drink. Alcohol can impair your judgment and actions. I have been on both sides of drinking and driving. With both my cousin and my uncle not drinking but being killed by drunk drivers. My son in law who broke the golden rule at our house and had a crash wile drinking. We were lucky that in the last no one but my son in law was involved and he only left the scene with minor injuries. In America there is an average of one life lost every 31 minutes and every 2 minutes someone is injured. The best secret here is not to drink and drive.

If you plan to drive to your destination then you may want to take along someone who can take turns driving. Keep everyone rested with the added bonus of taking turns deciding on the music. A long car ride can be very trying on anxiety. The rider in the shotgun seat should stay awake so that they can help keep the driver company. Two alert drivers are always better than one.

Take along a map While we often rely on our phones for navigation there are some places that service is not available. Having a map is always a nice backup plan when on a road trip there are just old plain maps. Keep valuables in your car locked up in your trunk.

When you stay in hotels check in at the front desk. Softly state your room number or have it wrote down so that no one else that should not know your room will hear it. It is best to reserve a room that is above the 1st floor but below the 6th floor. First floor rooms are easier to break into, and rooms above the sixth floor are sometimes too high for fire ladders to reach. Make sure to make a mental note of where the nearest fire exits are as well as stairwells. Make sure all windows and doors are locked and secure. Make sure when entering or leaving your room that your door is shut.

Keeping your money safe while on spring break is yet another issue. If you plan to use the ATM head there in a group. Before using the ATM ensure that there is nothing that should not be near the ATM. If you do not like how this ATM is or there are people around that should not be there go to another ATM. When entering your numbers into the ATM cover the keypad with the other.

Be safe in the water as well. Drinking + sun can equal a bad sunburn and can maximize the effects of alcohol. It is important if you are out in the sun that you keep well hydrated. The feelings of faint or light headed are warning signs you need to find shade and a bit of water at once. Sunscreen is needed as well when out in the sun. Sun exposure during the hours when UV rays are the most intense between 10 am and 4 pm but even when it is cloudy outside the sun still has the power to burn.

When getting into the water to swim make sure to take a buddy with you. Be aware of the flag system for water safety. The red flag stay out of water, yellow flag use caution in the water, and blue flag swim safely. Be aware that in natural water it is difficult to know how deep the water is.

Fools Fall In Love

These two, my daughter and her husband (my son in love) were married April fools day 2015.

Alcohol Awareness Month

Alcohol Awareness Month was founded and sponsored by NCADD in 1987. I was 17 years old at the time and had grown up knowing that it was a drunk driver that killed my uncle in the 1970s. Drinking was something our family did not do. Each April the NCADD reaches out to the public with information about alcohol, alcoholism and recovery.
Alcoholism is a chronic, progressive disease. It is a disease that many are genetically predisposed and fatal if untreated. People can and do recover from alcoholism though. As many as 20 million individuals and family members are living lives in recovery. It is America's #1 Public Health issue.
Alcohol Awareness month provides a focused opportunity across America to increase awareness and understanding of alcoholism, its causes, effective treatments and recovery. An opportunity to decrease stigma and misunderstandings in order to dismantle the barriers to treatment and recovery, and thus, make seeking help more readily available to those who suffer from this disease.
The first weekend of April is set up by NCADD to be Alcohol Free Weekend. It is to help raise public awareness about the use of alcohol and how it may be affecting individuals, families, businesses and our communities. The NCADD will extendan open invitation to all Americans to engage in three alcohol free days.

Sourdough Pull Apart Pizza Bread

1 round loaf sourdough bread
1 cup mozzarella cheese
1/3 cup mini pepperoni
1/4 cup melted butter
1 tea. minced garlic
1 tea. Italian seasoning
1 cup marinara sauce, for dipping
Cooking Directions

Preheat the oven to 400 F.
Line a baking sheet with two 24-inch long sheets of foil, cross wise, and leave the overhang.
Slice the bread making 5 cuts one way, and 5 cuts the other way, being sure to cut nearly to the bottom, but careful NOT to cut all the way through. You want to make a grid of pieces that can be ripped off, but still intact.
Place the bread on the foil covered baking sheet.
Stuff the mozzarella and mini pepperonis in the cracks evenly with your hands.
Combine melted butter, garlic, and Italian seasoning.
Drizzle mixture all over the bread, making sure it goes into the crevices as well.
Take the overhand of foil and use it to loosely cover the bread.
Bake at 400 F for 20 minutes with the foil on.
After 20 minutes, pull the foil down, and bake another 5-10 minutes, until the cheese is completely melted and bread is golden brown.
Tear pieces off and dip into warmed marinara sauce. Enjoy!

While I think this is a great bread to serve long side pizza what do you like to serve as a meal on the side of pizza??

One Cent Day

Are You a Fossil Fool

Fossil Fools Day in an environmental demonstration day that occurs on April 1st each year. The name of the special day takes on both the roles of fossil fuels and April Fool's Day. The first time Fossil Fools Day was celebrated in 2004. The day came together by coordinating teams from the United States and Canada. The event was used as an event to encourage support for climate justice, strong legislation, corporate responsibility and a clean renewable energy future.

We live in a world dealing with impacts of a changed climate. From the hurricanes to flooding as well as other weather issues the world is dealing with a variety of issues. Communities are being impacted by climate changes as well as techniques such as fracking. Canada is reaching its limit on fossil fue. It is the corporations that are setting us on track for more extreme weather, drought, desertification, wildfires and worse. It is also these corporations that help us claim April 1st as Fossil Fools day. If the companies keep on tract that they are currently on the fossil fuels may become extinct as well.

How it affects my life:
Every time that I (we) complain about the cost of gas the gas companies strive to find it cheaper and more of it. When I was a kid we walked  and rode our bikes so much more than I see my community doing now.  Since a kid I have heard that we would use up our fossil fuels and to protect them but I do not hear this as much now days and I do not see us striving to keep our energy cost to a minimum as we once did. I do realize that when I was a kid there were many events going on in the world that affected the price of gas and energy and our parents faced a much higher cost but should we not still strive to conserve. I for one take the fossil fool challenge and will find ways to change the way I use energy.

What are some ways you try conserve energy??

National Love Your Children Day

The month of April takes time to bring awareness to the prevention of child abuse. Each year on the first Saturday on April the day of National Love Our Children Day is celebrated. The day honors all children. It is a day that we should be encouraged to have a respectful relationship with our children.

National Love our Children day is the brainchild of Love Our Children USA. It is the mission of this organization to promote the welfare of Children. The first Love Our Children day took place on April 2004 and every first Saturday in April since that time the goal has been the same.

One thing I do daily for my children is to pray for them. Here are a few prayers that you may want to use as well

Birding

Birdwatching or birding is a form of wildlife observation in which the observation of birds is a recreational activity. It can be done with the naked eye, through a visual enhancement device like binoculars and telescopes, by listening for bird sounds or by watching public webcams.

Birding is a hobby where individuals enjoy the challenge of bird study, listening or other general activities involving bird life. Birding became a hobby in the late 18th century. It was led by a group of four scientist. Before this time birds were watched and looked at as food. The study of birds and natural history in general became increasingly prevalent in Britain during the Victorian Era.

In the late 19th century the call for bird protection became popular. The Audubon society was started to protect birds from the growing trade in feathers. This trade was popular in the United States and in Britain. The Royal Society for Protection of Birds started in Britain about the same time.

The early and mid 20th century in the United States seen a popularity in birding in the eastern seaboard region. Ludlow Griscom and Roger Tory Peterson wrote books about birding. Stuffed birds were used to illustrate the beautiful color pictures.

The Audubon Society stood against such practices. The invention of the car made birding more popular as watchers could now travel. What began as a hobby in developed countries is now incresing in number of watchers in developing countries as well.

Tangible Karma Day

I grew up learning the Golden Rule through church lessons, family ways and sometimes even in school. The one rule that states"Do unto others as you'd have them do to you" is part of many cultures and religions. There are those statements of karma as well that state "you reap what you sow" or :"what goes around comes around"

The world seems to have an energy that when released comes back to you. Tangible Karma allows you to help yourself and others at the same time. Karma allows you to expect that whatever you give out will come back to you.

Amber Nicole Dilger formed the company of Tangible Karma in 2005. She had an idea to recycle and reuse that all could be a part of. Visit the website to donate goods and track how they are used to help others. Amber had a strong conviction of being a steward of the Earth and making the best possible use of its resources.

Ways you can take part in Tangible Karma Day:
host a small group gathering at your home. Have everyone bring something to donate. Another great idea is to do a bit of volunteering. There are many ways that you can do  this including in local shelter, homeless shelter, domestic violence shelter, communities service and elsewhere. Look in your community to see where you can volunteer.

The feeling of doing good is one thing that you can leave with. Giving of your time, of your love, of your talents, of your "extras" is what Tangible Karma is all about. The feeling of giving as good as receiving.

Oranges and lemons

I love citrus fruit. The delicious taste of the sweet but tangy oranges and lemons makes my toungue dance. Oranges originated around 2500 B.C. in Asia. Ancient Europeans grew oranges for medicinal purposes. Vitamin C has remained an excellent cold remedy to this day.

Lemons are a cross between the citron and the sour orange? Christopher Columbus brought the first lemon and orange seeds on his journey. Unknowingly he would introduce oranges and lemons through the New World Today. California and Florida still grow the fruits quite well. Sailors would plant orange trees along their trade routes to prevent scurvy. A disease that develops from a deficiency of vitamin C. Sailors would plant orange trees along their trade routes to prevent scurvy. A disease that develops from a deficiency of vitamin C One orange has enough vitamin C for 2 day supply. A lemon provides 50% of required vitamin C.

There is an average of 600 varieties of oranges. You may have heard of a few of them such as blood oranges, navel and valencia. The orange is a hybrid of mandarin and pomelo is unknown to grow in the wild.

In the United States orange is the fourth most popular fruit and Orange Juice is the most popular. In the world orange is the world's third favorite flavor, coming in behind chocolate and vanilla. The more bitter flavor oranges are used to make marmalade. Lemon juice has a sour taste as there is 5-6% acid in the juice.

Brazil grows 1/3 of the worlds oranges. An average of 17.8 million tons per year. Most of the oranges grown are produce for their juice. Lemon trees will produce fruit year round. One tree can produce 500 to 6oo pounds of lemons in a single year. The most common lemons include Eureka, Lisbon and Meyer.

One gardening tip you may not be aware of is to sprinkle orange peel over your veggie garden and it will help repel slugs.

Oranges are high in anti oxidants that help neutralize the effects of free radicals in your body. Free radicals are thought to cause diseases and aging. Eating an orange can help you stay young and healthy.

You may think that an orange is named after its color. You would be wrong. Navel oranges, however do get their name from the belly button. Look at the opposite end of the fruit's stem and you may see something that resembles a belly button. The bigger the naval the sweeter the orange.

Oranges can be stored in refrigerator or at room temperature. They last about 2 weeks no matter where stored. Store them loose and not in plastic bag as they develop mold when exposed to moisture. To save lemon place in plastic bag after sprinkling them with water to keep them tasting fresh. Frozen lemons can last a month or longer.

In ancient times lemons would be presented to one king to another. Lemons were once very rare and thus a form of treasure.

Looking for an easy remedy for sore throat?? Add the juice of one lemon to an equal amount of hot water. This will create an anti bacterial gargle. Lemon zest is used to flavor baking recipes and other dishes. Lemon tree leaves can be used to make up tea and as a prep for cooked meats. Lemons are great cleaning agents because of their high acidic nature. Lemon juice low pH makes it a great disinfectant, breaks up grease and oil and gets rid of bad odors. Lemon oil is used in non toxic pesticides. Lemon juice can be used to preserve foods that easily brown. A squeeze of lemon in warm water may help relieve constipation.

The First Monday in April finds Benton Kentucky busy with traffic, lines of vendors selling all sorts of goodies, and many enjoying the age old community tradition of tater day. Tater day is perfect for the entire family, its like the unofficial start of spring. After being around for nearly 2 centuries Tater Day continues to be well attended.

The festival was started in 1843 to celebrate spring. It was a time for townsfolk would get together and trade in sweet potato slip, used to grow the plants. It started out as a trade day and continues. The day will host carnival rides, games, a market, a potato eating contest, mule pulls and a "biggest potato" contest and a large parade.

There are several ways to make enjoy potatoes. These dishes include:

1. Baked
2. Boiled
3. Steamed
4. Roasted
5. Mashed
6. Fried
7. Grilled
12. In Stew
13. In Soup

Sweet potatoes in Kentucky is a main cash crop. Thus the reason for starting Tater Day. The trading and selling of sweet potatoes helps make this special day the oldest continuous trade day in the U.S.

There are over 100 varieties of potatoes in the United States but world wide there are more than 4 thousand varieties.

Before this post was you aware of the Kentucky tater day?? What is your favorite potato recipe.

Crayon Day

Crayola crayons just announced that they would be having a color gain retirement The color would be dandelion yellow. The new color has not been announced but has been suggested to be a type of blue. Until this news there were 120 colors that included 23 reds, 19 blues, 16 purples, 14 oranges, 11 browns , 8 yellows, 2 grays , 2 coppers, 2 blacks, 1 white, 1 gold and 1 silver.

Trivia Facts for Crayola Crayon Day
Ever wonder how many crayons are produced?? The number may surprise you. Every day there are over 12 million crayons a day and nearly 3 billion crayons made a year.

Have you ever dined at a restaurant that caters to families?? There may be a color sheets and small packs of crayons. Did you know that every year that more than 100 million crayons are thrown out  every year by more than 15,000 restaurant chains.

A child can wear down 720 crayons by their 10th birthday. Since 112 average crayons equals one pound of waste a child can make 6 lbs of waste just in crayons a year.

Now a question for you:
what do you think the new color will be ??

Create Your Own Compost

Spring is here ready or not. Many of our minds have all ready turned to gardening. One frugal way to feed your garden is to makeup homemade compost. Composting is cost effective and is also good for the environment. The reason is because you are making sure that biodegradable foods are getting to break down.

To make your own compost start by getting a container to put your food scraps in. This does not have to be a fancy compost container. It could be as simple as a plastic container. The one requirement is that it has a lid.

You will want to keep this container in an out of the way spot that is easy to get to. One idea is large heavy duty garbage can with locking lid. Simply drill about a dozen holes in the bottom of the plastic can for storage. There are containers that are specially made for composting but they often cost more than a regular garbage can.

All food scraps including coffee grinds should be put into the container. Meat can be added if you don't mind getting maggots in your compost heap. You must also be aware that if you add meat you may attract wild animals. When your indoor container is full time to dump it into the outside composting bin. Each time you do this be sure to add some dried composting material as well. Wood chips, dried leaves or plant cuttings, shredded papers are all browns and food scraps and fresh leaves and cuttings are called "greens" You will want 2 browns to 1 part of green. This will help it decompose quickly. If you do not have enough browns do not worry it will just take a bit longer to decompose.

When your outside container fills up start a new one and continue to turn your old one until it begins to look like soil. When it no longer has recognizable food items in it dump the mix into an outdoor pile and use it to fertilize your garden.

Bi-Polar

My mother suffered from maniac depression. This title has been updated to bi-polar. There were times in my childhood I do not recall my mother being there. My grand-parents did the best that they could to take care of us. My dads parents hired in a set of sisters Sally and Ann to clean the house and take care of us. One of them would spend the day playing games with me and my brothers and sisters and the other would take care of the house and yard. My mother would spend the day in her bed away from all of us.

The National Institute of Mental Health defines bi-polar having three major types. The first sees the individual having manic episodes that last at least 7 days or manic symptoms so severe that the individual needs immediate hospital care. Depressive episodes are present as well and last at least 2 weeks. Having both depression and manic together can happen as well. The second type of bi-polar has a pattern of depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes, the full blown manic episodes are missing. The third type o Bipolar known as Cyclothymia sees the individual suffering from hypomanic symptoms as well as numerous periods of depressive symptoms lasting at least 2 years or 1 year if the individual is a child or adolescent. The symptoms of hypomanic episode and depressive episode is missing.

My mother is not alone in her illness as there is an average of 2 out of every 100 adults who suffer with bipolar. More than 1/2 of these cases started during their adolescence. About 75% of people with bipolar disorder also met the criteria for another mental health disorder. There is no reason to be afraid to let others know. If you suffer with bipolar you are not alone and should look for help
I end this post with a quick question for you the reader. What is it that you would like to share with us about bi-polar?? Please leave a comment and let us know

Beauty of Hydrangea's

Hydrangea are beautiful perennial bushes. The bush produces huge flower heads in mid-summer. Native to North and South America, Himalayas and Central and Eastern Asia produce beautiful flowers of various colors. Colors include white, pink, blue , lilac, purple, and shades of these colors. The flower heads have two types of florets Sterile florets are male and form the large, colorful sepals on the outside of the flower head. The fertile florets are usually found in the center of the cluster.

Spring through fall even when the plant is not in bloom the hydrangea bush has attractive foliage The bush will shed their leaves in the fall. The bush can grow from 3 to 10 feet tall and there are some that will grow up to 25 feet tall. Most varieties of this bush prefer full sun to partial shade. The leafless bush become s a less than attractive clump of stalks and stems into the following spring.

Hydrangea bushes are easy to grow. They prefer full sun to partial shade. If you live in a warm climate then you may want to plant them in a more shaded area. The plant prefers moist, rich soil the drains well. You should see blooms that begin in mid summer. Removing spent blooms is advised to promote more blooms. Thinning some of the stems will help the plant to grow bigger.

March is Celery and Peanut Butter Month

Celery is a vegetable with many health benefits & myths surrounding it. There is a TON of Vitamin K in Celery, it will hold many of its nutritional values when cooked, it helps with your digestive tract, and supports cardiovascular health. Additionally celery helps with weight loss because of the amount of “dietary bulk” you are getting from it – few calories for much food

Celery is crunchy , low cal vegetable but many thought it was not  a key part of your health support. Research has greatly improved what many think about celery's anti inflammatory health benefits, including its protection against inflammation in the digestive tract itself. Celery contains vitamin c and other antioxidants that our bodies need. If you are steaming vegetables with your meals include celery. Celery will retain its value better being steamed rather than boiling. Celery should be kept in fridge no longer than 5 to 7 days as a window of time for consuming fresh celery. Likewise, to keep its nutritional value do not chop up celery until it is ready to use.

Peanut butter may be high in fats but there are all natural and other great varieties that have less fats. All natural and has a wide range of other nutrients filling its container. Peanut Butter is a great source of proteins, so even those who do not eat animal proteins can enjoy lots of this stuff unless they are allergic to nuts. Peanuts are a native food to Americas

Snacks are a valuable resource to me. My waist likes healthy snacks and some days I crave something sweet as a quick snack. I also love snacks that are crunchy and salty. Celery is crunchy, peanut butter offers enough sweetness with flavor. It is easy to cover a piece of celery with peanut butter. There are healthy nutrients in this snack, its easy to make and taste great.

I leave you with this quick question :::: What is your favorite easy to make snack???
