International Tongue Twister Day

When I was a kid we often ran around saying tongue twister. No my tongue was not twisted and I did not twist anyone else's tongue. A tongue twister if you did not know is a phrase that is very hard for people to articulate, especially when spoken in a sequence really fast.

One thing that I did not know but found out while researching for this post is that most langues including sign language have their own versions of tongue twisters. Sign language finds it own twister also known as finger fumbles when the words of a tongue twister get repeated time and time again getting faster. This can often make the fingers fumble.

Tongue twisters often are created with the similar sounding words that aliterate That means that the first letters or sounds in the words are the same. Take a look at a few of these tongue twisters:

Sword Swallowing Day

Most of us are do not swallow swords or know anyone that does but for those that do this day is for you. In fact the Sword Swallowers Association International reports that there are less than a few dozen full time professional sword swallowers that are actively performing around the world today. But for one day a year, February 25, 2017 the world will have the rare opportunity to witness them defy death and do what they do the best -- as a group swallow swords.

Sword Swallowing originated in India and requires the practitioner to use mind over matter techniques to repress natural reflexes in order to insert solid steel blades that are 15 to 25 inches long. The sword blade will travel down the esophagus and into the stomach.

Sword Swallowing has been a talent that has been performed over 4000 years. The dangerous act  those that perform them are taking risks. In 1868 a sword swallower was used by a Dr. from Frelburg Germany to help develop the first rigid endoscope. In 1906 a sword swallower underwent the first esophageal electrocardiogram in Wales. So they are doing more than performing acts they are helping to save lives. Those that swallow swords are still active in raising money for subjects such as esophageal cancer, sysphagia, GERD and other upper gastro intestinal and swallowing disorders.

Enjoy some clam chowder

Growing up I never quite got the chance to enjoy sea food. Beside the occasional butterfly shrimp my parents really did not like seafood. I do have an aunt that lives out near Maine and because of her every now and again I would get a taste of yumminess in the form of well cooked seafood. Clam Chowder being one of them. If you have only tasted clam chowder out of can then you have no idea how the good stuff taste

13 Slices Thick Cut Bacon
1 Cup Chopped Onion
1 Cup Chopped Celery
2 - 3 Cans Fancy Whole Baby Clams (w/juice)
2 Cups Chicken Broth
2 Cups Heavy Whipping Cream
1 tsp Ground Thyme
1 tsp Salt
1 tsp Pepper

Cook bacon until crispy (reserve bacon grease in the pan)
Chop onion and celery
Place onion and celery in bacon grease and cook until soft (do not discard the grease it will go in the crockpot with the veggies)
After veggies are soft pour all ingredients (including crumbled bacon) into the crockpot
Cook on low for 4-6 hours or on High for 2 hours.

Nutritional value is there as well
Clams have more iron than beef. There are many more minerals in clams as well. Clams offer phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper, manganese and selenium.

Soft shell clams are the best to be used. If you are using local clams you will want to check with local authorities concerning their safety

Clams are good for your heart as well. Clams are a source of Omega 3 fats acids that are needed for the body as well

Clams are a lean protein source. With more than 20 grams of protein and less than 2 grams of fat in a 3 oz serving. Clams have more protein than oysters and scallops but around the same amount as chicken. Clams have more vitamins and minerals than chicken

Nuts are Nutritious : Chocolate Nut Recipe included

Nuts are great for kids, however there is a large nut allergy as well so make sure that the children you offer nuts to do not have any known allergies. Nuts are natural and can be found in nature. They are packed with power. Nutrients, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, healthy fats, protein and fiber can all be found in nuts. Children require foods like nuts to grow, develop and learn. Almonds, brazil nuts, cashews, chestnuts, hazelnuts, macadamias, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios and walnuts are all nuts that can help our children. Peanuts that are actually legumes are often considered nuts and have similar nutritional compositions. You can look at it like this:

A 30g of nuts is equal to around a small handful or approximately:
30 pistachio kernels
20 almonds or hazelnuts
15 cashews, pecans or macadamia nuts
9 or 10 brazil nuts or walnuts
4 chestnuts

for every 30g of nuts not matter what kind you eat in return you child will receive

36% of the required vitamin E in your child's diet
13% of your child's daily fiber requirement
4g protein
as well as

B-group vitamins, calcium, iron, zinc, potassium and magnesium

Here is a great snack to get started. While there is a sweet side of this it gets children to enjoying nuts that will help their nutritional diet as well

1 pound almonds (raw or roasted, I had a mix of both)
1 egg white
1 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 TBL cocoa powder

Mix egg white and vanilla with a  mixer until frothy.  Dump 1 pound of nuts into egg whites and mix until coated.
In a separate bowl, combine sugar and cocoa powder.  Dump sugar and cocoa powder into egg white/almond mixture and stir to combine.
Pour almonds onto cookie sheet (sprayed with cooking spray).  Cook almonds in oven at 250 degrees for 1 hour, Taking out to mix every 15 minutes.

You can offer your kids in many fun ways here are some ideas
place a trail mix in their school lunch box
toss them in a stir fry the family loves
pine nuts go well in a salad
chopped pistachios are great sprinkled over soup
use to crust a grilled cheese, chopped macadamia nuts is great for this
crushed pecans go great over low fat yogurt and fruit
walnuts are great in homemade banana bread
chopped nuts go well over oatmeal or hot breakfast cereal
use a nut spread on toast or as a sandwich filling or better yet try in celery sticks

Brigadeiros Perfect for Carnival or any time

It's Carnival time in Brazil. Many foods will be indulged upon and you can make some at home for your family as well. One simple recipe to create and share with your friends is Brigadeiros.

Brigadeiros is a traditional food served at kids birthday parties. You may also find them in Brazil. These small balls of condensed milk and cocoa covered with sugar sprinkles or nuts. A super easy recipe and great for the kids to help make as well.

1 can sweetened condensed milk (400 g)
4 tbsp cocoa powder
Pinch of salt
3 tbsp butter
Few drops good vanilla extract
Chocolate sprinkles for decoration or your choice of small decoration such as nuts, coconut, etc...

Pour the condensed milk into your heaviest pot. Stir in the cocoa powder and the salt.
Cook, stirring constantly, over low heat. Keep the mixture barely at a boil to prevent burning and sticking.
Cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring, until mixture becomes very thick and shiny and starts to pull away from the bottom and sides of the pan.
Remove from heat and stir in the butter and the vanilla.
Chill in the for an hour.
Roll the mixture into 2.5 cm balls. I also made some mini ones, very tiny pop-in-melt-in-your-mouth treats, great for someone watching the calories or just to serve with coffee at the end of a meal.
Roll each ball in the chocolate sprinkles, and place in a paper liner.
Chill until ready to serve

Couple of tips before we go:
don't make the balls too big. It is better to be bite size because the treat will become quite sticky quickly in hands when held too long before eating
While there are some traditional brigadeiros this recipe should not be
These treats can be kept up to 5 days in the fridge which makes it a treat that can be made ahead of time before taking them to a potluck or party

Feed The Birds Bark Batter

1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup flour
2 cups cornmeal

Combine all ingredients until well-mixed. I used my hands. Feel free to add some sunflower seeds, nuts, dried fruits, anything your birds might like!
There are many ways to serve this treat! We have a board attached to a pole, but you can also smear it right onto the tops of your bird feeders, or even onto the branches of a tree or bush. Or, add chunks of it to a tray feeder. The options are endless

Make a Squirrel Feeder From a Mason Jar

Wide-mouth Mason jar and band
Crafting wire (or strong ribbon)
Spoon with a fairly flat handle
Secure the band on the jar
With the Mason jar upright, hold the spoon against it. The spoon’s handle should be pressed against the side, and its bowl should be up above the top of the jar. This will create a little ledge for the squirrels to stand on
Wrap wire around the jar and spoon handle to secure them together
Find a fence or tree for your feeder. Use more wire to attach it and hold it in place

Squirrel Food walnuts, hickory nuts, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds and peanuts with the shells on. Make sure you only give them raw, unsalted varieties.

Tip: Make sure you place your feeder where you can see it from a window. Watching the squirrels — and other animals — stop in and feast will be so much fun for the whole family. Meanwhile, your birds will be enjoying their own yummy treats!

Happy Birthday George Washington

The great event that happened over 250 years ago was the birth of one of the greatest men to live in the United States. George Washington who was brave enough to become the first president of the United States was born on February 22, 1732. Brave, yes I said brave because right after the American Revolution no one was quite sure would happen and it took a brave man to lead this country not knowing if his life would be taken.

George Washington's birthday is celebrated as a federal holiday on the third Monday of February. The holiday can occur as early as the 15th and as late as the 21st or whatever day the third Monday falls upon. The day is often known as President's Day and is an occasion to honor all the great men (so far) that have served as president. In the late 1800s it was illegal to partake in trade on George Washington's birthday but now many states celebrate Presidents day instead.

The national celebration of George's birthday began while George Washington was still alive and continued after he died. The late 20th century changed the day to "President's Day" Washington died in 1799 but it was not til 1879 that Washington's birthday became a federally recognized holiday. In 1968 this changed when congress passed the "Uniform Monday Holiday Act" The act was to provide federal employees with more three day weekends. Since this act George Washington's birthday has not been celebrated on the actual day of his birth since the law took effect in 1971.

Strawberry Lime Margarita cupcakes ----- Non-alcoholic

oil and egg whites (as called for in cake mix instructions)
3/4 c strawberry margarita drink mix (syrup, non-alcoholic)
1/2 c water

Frosting:
1 c (2 sticks) butter (salted or unsalted)
1/4 tsp salt (if using unsalted butter)
4 c powdered sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp lime juice
2-3 TBSP milk

Toppings:
1 TBSP lime zest
sliced strawberries, rinsed and dried

Cupcake directions
Preheat oven to 350°.  Line cupcake pans with paper liners.
Add 1/2 c water to 3/4 c margarita mix (to create 1 1/4 c of liquid).
In large bowl, combine cake mix, strawberry liquid mixture, oil, and egg whites.  Beat for 2 minutes on medium speed.
Bake for 16-20 minutes.  Set aside and allow to cool.

Frosting directions
Using the whisk attachment of an electric mixer, beat butter on medium speed until completely smooth (about 1 minute).
Add salt (if using unsalted butter).
One cup at a time, add 2 cups of powdered sugar, beating after each addition.
Add vanilla and lime juice and beat to combine.
Add 1 TBSP milk and continue beating.
Add 2 remaining cups of powdered sugar, one cup at a time.
Add remaining 1 TBSP milk until consistency is reached (1 more TBSP if you prefer thinner frosting).  Add a bit of lime zest, if you'd like.
Pipe the frosting onto the cupcakes after they have cooled completely.

For the topping
Top with a strawberry slice and a sprinkling of lime zest.
(If you chill these, make sure to take them out of the fridge a few minutes before serving...to allow the frosting to soften back up.  It hardens in the fridge!)

Time To Eat Continental Breakfast

A Continental breakfast will contain traditional American breakfast cuisine. Pancakes, eggs and meat are just a few items.  Often you will find cereal, bagels and fruit at continental breakfasts. Hotels that offer continental breakfast include the price of their meal into the price of the room. A hotel often provides a continental breakfast in the lobby or a room near the lobby. The food is typically on a large table or counter. Plates, bowls, forks, spoons and knives are made available. Most offer tables and chairs where guests can sit and eat, or they could take their breakfast back to their rooms or elsewhere.

Normal foods served are:

Breads including  toast, doughnuts, pastries, croissants and rolls. In most places that we have stayed there is a waffle machine where you can make your own my son loves this. Butters, jams, and jellies syrup are readily available as well.

Beverages such as juice, hot beverages and often water, milk and soda are all offered. Hot chocolate might be available for children or for guests who do not drink coffee or tea.

Fruits and cereals are other foods that are available on the continental breakfasts. Bananas, apples, oranges and grapefruits. Cold cereals and milk as well as hot cereals such as instant oatmeal is available.

Some places make cook up eggs or meats. Scrambled eggs are most often served by the side of bacon or sausage lings. Hash browns may be served as well.

Dining at a continental breakfast

There is a normal time period when the food will be served. One of our favorites serve both a evening meal, bedtime snack and continental breakfast all of which is served at certain times. Guests who wait til the end should expect that the supply of some items might be gone. Remember that guest should not take extra large portions as this is considered poor manners. The breakfast is provided to be a quick meal not a full meal that will satisfy an appetite for hours to come

Time To Feed The Birds

With all the spring birds making it back into our neighborhood I can well imagine they will need a headstart getting some food. The one thing we always did when my children was young was to make peanut butter bird feeders. This year my grand children and I will revive that tradition.

resource from gogrowgo

just 3 things that you will need
toilet paper roll
peanut butter roll
bird seed

start by spreading peanut butter on the toilet paper roll. Do not over pack it just needs enough for feed to stay on all sides. Remember to remove any excess paper

after rolling the toilet paper covered with peanut butter in bird feed. Then it is time to hang it Do this by taking a long piece of string going through the roll itself and hanging to the tree

No where to hang a bird feeder like this then try this

To make these bird feeders you will need some orange cups and a variety of nuts, berries and seeds and grains. Many items can be found in your cupboard. Use whatever a bird or squirrel can make a meal of. You will also need a small package knox gelatin and 1/4 cup of water.

Using a small pot on the stove dissolve the gelatin. Heat til it simmers and the gelatin is dissolved and the mix is clear. Let cool a couple of minutes Mix in bird seed, berries, nuts til all is coated. Spoon the bird seed mix into the orange peel halves and pack to make sure it wont fall out or move.

Florida Treaty

The Florida treaty had a few different names including the Adams - Onis Treaty, the Transcontinental Treaty as well as the Florida Purchase Treaty. While it has many names that come to mind it had one job. The treaty was between the United States and Spain and took place in 1819. Florida would be ceded to the U.S. and the treaty defined the boundary between the U.S. and New Spain. This treaty became very important settling a standing dispute between the two countries of where the border was.

The treaty took place during war driven time when their was tension between the U.S. and Spain over territorial boundaries. Great Britain would be no help as it was directly after the American Revolution. The Latin American Wars were being fought for Independence as well. Spain actually considered Florida a burden as they could not afford to send settlers or garrisons. The territory would be ceded to the United States to settle disputes along the Spanish Texas.

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. Have you ever been fishing? Did you catch a fish? If so did you keep it or throw it back? If you haven't been fishing is that something you'd like to try?

I have been fishing a few different times in my life. I have even caught a fish before but I did not remove it from my hook, well shoot I did not even bait my hook. My hubby did both of those things for me and when I was a kid of course the adult in charge did. I believe that we did keep that fish while if they are not big enough we will throw them back. Yes, we do use the fish we keep each year we have a large fish fry.

2. What's something you're always fishing for in your purse, wallet, desk, or kitchen junk drawer?

It seems I am always fishing for something in my purse. From my keys, change and even my credit card something is always in the wrong place. The two things I am always fishing for in my desk are the scissors and my pen. This is because someone is always "borrowing" them. The kitchen junk drawer is no longer then since red0ing my kitchen in January (not there yet)

3. Your favorite fish tale or movie?

One of the older movies is a fish named Wanda. My grand-kids love Dori and Nemo

4. Are you sunrise, daylight, twilight or night? Explain why you chose your answer.

You will often find me up before or about time for the sun to rise as I work the early shift. I would not say that is my personality though as I am not in good spirits then. Night leaves me feeling a bit weary eyed and to me night life would be someone who gets it going in the night time. I would say twilight or daylight best fits me as I am awake and going and ready to have fun.

5. What's the oldest piece of clothing you own and still wear?

I keep my blue jeans and uniforms only leave when they are worn out. So those are two different sides of me but still share one closet and most likely share it the longest

6. We've got one more month of (officially) winter here in the Northern hemisphere. Are you feeling the need for a getaway? What's been the best and worst part of your winter so far?

I am so in the hopes that spring is on its way. We have been tempted with warm days but they never say so much. I plan a get away just as soon as I can, right now company changing hands so have to stay until it is all thought out. We have not had a hard winter here so far

7.  The Wednesday Hodgepodge lands on National Margarita Day...will you be celebrating? Frozen or on the rocks? Are you a Jimmy Buffett fan? If so, what's your favorite JB tune?

My husband is the margarita drinker around here I would prefer a virgin margarita if I had one. Daughter (26 years old) loves those frozen ones. As far as Jimmy Buffet goes yes I love his songs including this one

The Raw Food Diet ==== What Is It???

The Raw Food Diet maintains the line that you can eat as much as you want with out gaining any weight. I know what you are thinking because it is the same thing I was thinking,,, How can that be???
The Raw Food Diet consists of unprocessed, preferably organic, whole foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, grains, legumes, dried fruit, seaweed, unprocessed organic or natural foods. With two-thirds of all food in the Raw Food Diet should not be heated to room temperature. The food also contains fewer trans fats and saturated fat than the typical Western diet.

Young coconut milk, fresh fruit and vegetables juice and purified water are all part of the Raw Food Diet. The diet deems that fruits and vegetables should be blended to release the nutrients. Drinking fresh juice allows your body to absorb more of the vitamins and minerals than eating the whole fruit and vegetables.

Those that follow the raw diet believe that cooked food is not good for our health. The way that food is taken in affects weight. The nutrients are often cooked out of food this is a known fact. The nutrition is often transformed by chemical reactions created by carcinogens, mutagens and free radicals. Thus, those that partake in the raw diet believe that cooking foods takes nutrients away and replaces it with poisons that leaves a bad effect on health

The proponents of the Raw Food Diet want you to know that the diet is filled with nutrients and fibers will help with you body metabolism. Not getting enough nutrients leads to a starvation mode that results in storing more fats. The raw food diet allows you to eat as much raw food as you care to this will not allow your body to get hungry or go into starvation mode so your body will not store the fat it thinks it needs.
